Nokia smartphones back in top 10 in Q1 2018 according to SA
|Market research company Strategy Analytics released their report about the state of the smartphone market in Q1 2018. According to Strategy Analytics, Nokia smartphones are back amongst the top 10 smartphone brands on the planet.
HMD Global grabbed 1.2% of the smartphone market in Q1 2018, compared to 0.9% in Q4 2017, as counted by SA and reported by tekniikkatalous.fi. HMD shipped 4.1 million smartphones during Q1 2018, which was enough to place it on No. 9 of smartphone manufacturers. In Q4 2017, HMD was at place 17 on the smartphone market, according to SA.
Yesterday, Counterpoint Research shared with us their data about HMD’s performance in Q1 2018, where they say that Nokia smartphones took 1.1% of market (No.10 had 1.3%), but they cannot give precise sales numbers because all the counting isn’t finalized yet. Both research companies place HMD’s share in the Q1 smartphone shipments little above 1%, which would be about 4 million units. Considering how small these numbers still are, the slight difference between percentages and ranked places doesn’t surprise, but we can say that HMD was around the 10th place on the smartphone vendors list.
Same as Counterpoint noted, Strategy Analytics also suggest stronger Q2 sales for HMD, because of global availability of Nokia 6.1, 7 plus and 8 Sirocco. In Q4 2017, according to Counterpoint Research, HMD shipped 4.4 million Nokia devices capturing 1% of the market. The precise numbers for Q1 2018 by CP will be released soon and then we can compare them.
Overall, the smartphone market declined in Q1 compared to the same quarter last year. As HMD isn’t obligated to release detailed quarterly numbers about their sales to the public, the only thing we can rely on are companies like Counterpoint Research, Strategy Analytics, IDC and other. Only official number from HMD that we got is that the company shipped 70 million Nokia phones last year.
