Confirmed: HMD will attend MWC2018; Can we expect new Nokia phones?

At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, HMD Global, the maker of Nokia phones, announced four new Nokia-branded devices – the Nokia 3310, Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and the global version of Nokia 6. On the official Mobile World Congress site, HMD Global appeared as an exhibitor for the event scheduled for February 2018.  Nokia is also registered as an exhibitor for MWC 2018.

What can we expect from HMD at MWC2018? Considering that HMD announced almost all phones (Nokia 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8) this year, with the Nokia 9 being rumored for launch by the end of the year, it’s hard to guess which new phones could HMD announce. Nokia 9 is rumored to come with Snapdragon 835 and we already saw some photos of the housing and front panel, which suggests that the device is already being manufactured. The 9 has to go on sale before the end of this year, because we saw what happened with LG’s G6 this year – great device, but undermined with a last year SoC. Hopefully, a global variant of Nokia 7 will launch also before the end of the year, because waiting for February 2018 seems a little too long.

Moreover, maybe HMD will launch new versions of Nokia 3, 5 and 6 that were launched on MWC2017, but we didn’t hear anything about possible successors of the current lineup, so it’s less likely that it will happen, but who knows?

What do you think what is HMD planing for MWC2018? Tell us down below. 🙂

I totally agree with you. I think it would be logical for them to launch new versions of last year’s releases. But I suppose that would depend on how much profit they’ve made so far from the 3, 5, and 6. Since they had distribution delays earlier this year, they may not have hit their targets and might want to leave the current devices on the market a little bit longer. But that might be market share suicide. Everyone else will be launching new up to date products.

The Nokia 9 launch is pretty tricky though. Samsung has already cornered the first batch of Snapdragon 845 chips, so everybody else will be behind. Hopefully HMD is already designing a device with the SD 845 in it. If they are, then the 9 should definitely be released this year. If it’s announced next year, I don’t know how it will sell. Everybody else except Samsung will be running the Snapdragon 835, so it may not make a difference

    • Yeah, don’t know what will they do with the 9 if not launched soon. I’m not so scared about the SoC, but more that it won’t be improved enough from the 8 to explain the higher price point. Looking what OnePlus did with 5 and 5T, wouldn’t be surprised if the biggest (hopefully not only) change was the screen.

If they release the 9 this year, they will have a full range of devices for the Christmas season. Yeah, they should definitely release it this year. Soon!
