Memory Shortages Crash the Smartphone Market: Who is Winning and Losing?

Market

Counterpoint Research (CR) has just released its latest report on the global smartphone market for the third quarter of the year (July to September)—and the numbers paint a grim picture. Overall shipments plummeted by 20% compared to Q3 2025. Yet, amid this massive downturn, only two tech giants emerged as clear winners, successfully growing their market shares: Samsung and Apple.

The Premium Segment Stays Resilient

Samsung maintained its leadership position, capturing a 23% share of the global market (up from 19% in the same quarter last year). Apple followed closely in second place with 22%, a significant jump from its 18% share in Q3 2025. This marks a historic milestone for Apple, as the company crossed the 20% market share threshold in a third quarter for the very first time.

Conversely, major Chinese manufacturers took a hit. Xiaomi saw its slice of the pie shrink from 14% to 10%, Oppo dropped from 12% to 9%, and vivo experienced a slight dip from 9% to 8%.

The Real Culprit: Expensive Memory

According to Counterpoint Research, Q3 2026 recorded the lowest third-quarter smartphone shipments in 14 years. Analysts attribute this historic slump to “continued memory shortages.” However, it is less about an absolute lack of components and more about a severe shortage of reasonably priced memory chips.

This explosion in component costs has heavily squeezed the more affordable end of the market, effectively pricing out budget-conscious consumers. Meanwhile, demand for premium devices has remained surprisingly resilient.

Samsung’s strong performance is directly linked to robust early demand for its latest generation of foldable devices. The Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Flip8 drove substantial sales, with the standard Fold8 reportedly reigning as the absolute king of the lineup.

Looking Ahead: Profit Over Volume

The rising costs of production have inevitably trickled down to the consumer. CR reports that global retail smartphone prices have surged by a staggering 20% so far this year.

The outlook for the remainder of the year remains highly challenging. Smartphone manufacturers are being forced to pivot their strategies, increasingly prioritizing profitability over sheer shipment volumes. As the year draws to a close, the industry can expect continued production cuts, significantly trimmed product portfolios, and an even sharper focus on the lucrative premium device segment.
