Everything We Know About the Huawei Mate 90, Pro, Pro Max, and RS Ultimate

Huawei is aggressively positioning its upcoming Mate 90 series to clash directly with Apple’s latest iPhones, pushing its traditional launch window forward by nearly two months. Expected to debut in China in the final week of September 2026, the new flagship lineup represents Huawei’s most ambitious hardware overhaul in years, fueled by a radical new approach to processor architecture.

While Huawei has not yet confirmed the full roster, consistent leaks point to a four-device lineup: the standard Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max, and the ultra-premium Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design.

The Kirin 9050 and “LogicFolding” Architecture

The defining feature of the Mate 90 series lies under the hood. The lineup will debut the Kirin 9050 chipset, which abandons traditional horizontal transistor shrinking in favor of a vertical stacking technology Huawei calls “LogicFolding” (part of its broader “Tau scaling law”).

By stacking logic circuits vertically, Huawei can drastically increase computing density without relying on the cutting-edge semiconductor nodes currently restricted by international sanctions. According to Huawei, this technology achieves a 53.5% increase in transistor density over last year’s Kirin 9030 Pro, packing 238 million transistors per square millimeter. The resulting chip is one-third smaller and consumes 40% less power at equivalent performance levels.

The chipset debuted earlier this month in the Mate XT 2 tri-fold, where Huawei claimed a 42% overall performance boost over the previous generation, including a 52% gain in multi-core performance. The standard Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro are expected to utilize a binned version of the Kirin 9050, while the Pro Max and RS Ultimate Design will harness the full power of the Kirin 9050 Pro.

Display: Dual-Layer OLED Across the Board

Huawei is bringing its premium display technology to the entire lineup. All four models are tipped to feature a flat 6.9-inch dual-layer tandem OLED panel. This technology, previously exclusive to the Mate 80 RS, uses two emissive layers to dramatically increase peak brightness while maintaining energy efficiency.

The screens will feature a 1.5K resolution, an LTPO backplane for adaptive refresh rates, and soft, heavily rounded corners. The polarizing three-hole punch front camera cutout from the Mate 80 series is expected to return.

The Huawei Mate 90 Lineup Breakdown

Huawei Mate 90 The entry-level model will feature a 50MP main camera, a 40MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP telephoto camera, supplemented by a multispectral sensor for color accuracy. It will be the slowest-charging device in the family at 66W. Despite the large 6.9-inch display, the chassis will remain relatively sleek at 7.85mm thick. It is expected in black, white, green, and pink.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro

The Pro tier introduces a massive leap in battery capacity, expected to house a 6,800mAh to 7,000mAh silicon-carbon cell with 100W fast charging. The camera system receives a major upgrade, featuring a large main sensor with a variable aperture for precise depth-of-field control and low-light performance. Uniquely, the Pro is expected to house two periscope telephoto lenses, offering dedicated optical zoom at different focal lengths.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max

The Pro Max pushes mobile photography further with a massive 1-inch-type primary sensor and a dual-periscope setup capable of 10x optical zoom. Leaks suggest Huawei is redesigning the camera island, moving from the circular housing of the Mate 80 series to a new square module. Despite its premium status, rumors suggest it will retain a side-mounted fingerprint scanner rather than upgrading to an ultrasonic under-display sensor. It will feature the Kirin 9050 Pro and Wi-Fi 7 support.

Huawei Mate 90 RS Ultimate Design

Sitting at the apex, the RS Ultimate Design will share the Pro Max’s Kirin 9050 Pro chip and dual-periscope camera system but will be distinguished by ultra-premium materials, exclusive colorways, and potentially the fastest charging speeds in the lineup.

Software: HarmonyOS 7 and the “Agent Era”

The entire Mate 90 series will run HarmonyOS 7 out of the box. Introduced earlier this month, the software represents a major shift toward system-level AI. Huawei’s Xiaoyi AI assistant has been upgraded to a system-wide “agent” capable of executing complex, multi-step workflows across applications. The OS also brings a visual redesign, fluid motion effects, and underlying kernel optimizations designed to maximize the new Kirin 9050 architecture.
