Xiaomi has officially slated its autumn hardware event for September 7, with the highly anticipated Xiaomi 18 Fold set to take center stage. Following a string of recent leaks, the tech giant has released official promotional material showcasing the device and introducing a new design philosophy it calls the “mid-fold.”

According to Lu Weibing, head of Xiaomi’s smartphone division, the 18 Fold is not just a supplementary device in the company’s portfolio. It is being positioned as Xiaomi’s most advanced flagship to date, engineered to go toe-to-toe with traditional, non-folding premium smartphones. Weibing predicts that this new mid-fold approach will become an industry standard for the next generation of foldable devices.

The “Mid-Fold” Philosophy

The mid-fold concept was born out of a desire to solve the primary ergonomic dilemmas of the current foldable market. Historically, large-screen foldables can be cumbersome, leading users to rely too heavily on the narrow outer screen. Conversely, compact clamshell foldables are highly portable but often compromise on battery, camera quality, and multitasking capabilities.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold aims for the exact middle ground. When closed, the device is roughly the size of a passport, allowing for comfortable one-handed use on its 5.38-inch cover display. When opened, it reveals a 7.58-inch main display with a newly optimized aspect ratio explicitly tailored for video consumption and heavy multitasking.

Key Specifications and Hardware

Official teasers and recent benchmark leaks have confirmed several high-end specifications for the upcoming device:

• Processor: The device will be powered by Xiaomi’s proprietary Xring O3 chipset.

• Memory: It is confirmed to be among the first smartphones equipped with CXMT’s next-generation LPDDR6 memory, promising significant boosts in speed and efficiency.

• Camera System: Co-developed with Leica, the rear features a horizontal camera strip housing a triple-lens array and an LED flash. The promotional video showcased the device in a striking red finish.

• Hinge Technology: Xiaomi is introducing a newly developed “dragon bone” hinge, validated through a rigorous, simulation-based testing system for enhanced durability.

• Software: The phone will run on Surge OS 4 and integrate Xiaomi’s MiMo on-device AI model for localized artificial intelligence processing.

A Packed Autumn Lineup

While the 18 Fold is the headliner, it will not share the stage alone. At the September 7 event, Xiaomi is also scheduled to unveil a robust lineup of accompanying hardware, including the Xiaomi N70 Pro, N70 Max, and N90 Max smartphones.
