Pixel Watch 5 Leaks: Release Date, Specs, and the Unexpected Price Hike
![]()
Google’s hardware secrets are notoriously difficult to keep, and the highly anticipated Pixel Watch 5 is proving to be no exception. As the tech giant gears up for an unusually early “Made by Google” event on August 12, 2026, a flurry of supply chain reports, regulatory filings, and one bizarre real-world discovery have painted a nearly complete picture of the upcoming wearable.
Set to debut alongside the new Pixel 11 smartphone series, the Pixel Watch 5 appears to be a calculated refinement rather than a radical redesign, bringing iterative hardware upgrades, a fresh color palette, and a noticeable bump in price.
The Underwater Prototype
If consumers were expecting a massive visual overhaul for the Pixel Watch 5, current evidence suggests Google is sticking to its guns. The circular, domed glass aesthetic that has defined the lineup since its inception is here to stay.
In a highly unusual turn of events, this design was practically confirmed by the ocean itself. Randy Pitchford, co-founder of Gearbox Software, recently discovered an unreleased prototype of the watch while scuba diving near the Caribbean island of St. Martin. Pitchford shared photos of the submerged device online, inadvertently proving that the wearable’s water resistance is highly effective—despite resting on the ocean floor, the watch was still functioning in a low-power state and displaying the correct time.
Sizing Upgrades and the “Pyrite” Finish
Following the successful strategy of its predecessor, the Pixel Watch 5 will reportedly launch in two sizes: 41mm and 45mm, catering to a wider variety of wrist sizes and screen preferences.
While the silhouette remains familiar, Google is refreshing its aesthetic offerings. Industry leaks point to a brand-new colorway dubbed “Pyrite.” Described as a pale, brassy-yellow hue with a sophisticated matte finish, it will be available across both size variants.
Buyers eyeing the 41mm model will have four finishes to choose from: Dark Anthracite (matte), Natural Silver (polished), Warm Gold (polished), and the new Pyrite (matte). The larger 45mm model will feature a slightly streamlined selection, omitting the Warm Gold option.
Silicon Debates and UWB Integration
The internal architecture of the Pixel Watch 5 remains the subject of intense industry speculation. While the previous generation utilized the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 to achieve much-needed battery improvements, rumors are split on what powers the new iteration.
Some sources indicate Google will adopt Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Wear Elite chipset, which promises standard bumps in battery efficiency and app loading speeds. Conversely, competing rumors suggest Google is finally introducing a custom Tensor chip for its wearables, bringing its smartwatch silicon in line with the processors powering its Pixel smartphones.
Regardless of the primary chipset, the integration of an ultra-wideband (UWB) chip is all but confirmed. This practical upgrade enables precise spatial tracking, meaning the Find My Device network will be significantly more accurate. Furthermore, UWB allows the Pixel Watch 5 to function as a seamless digital car key for compatible vehicles.
The Price of Innovation
Consumers looking to upgrade will need to prepare their wallets. For the first time since the original model launched in 2022, Google is raising the base price of its smartwatch lineup.
According to leaked retail data, the base 41mm Wi-Fi model will launch at $399—a $50 premium over last year’s model. The larger 45mm Wi-Fi variant is slated for a $30 increase, bringing its starting price to $429. Models equipped with cellular connectivity will carry even heftier price tags, reportedly reaching up to $529 for the top-tier 45mm LTE version.
Industry analysts attribute this price adjustment to broader macroeconomic trends, specifically the surging costs of memory and storage chips. By passing these manufacturing costs onto the consumer, the $399 Pixel Watch 5 will now compete directly in the same pricing bracket as the base Apple Watch Series 11.
Pre-orders are expected to go live immediately following the August 12 event in New York City, with global retail availability slated for August 20.
