Xiaomi 17 Series Confirmed: Skips 16, New Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Inside

Xiaomi is skipping straight to the Xiaomi 17 series. Company president Lu Weibing announced on Weibo that there will be no “Xiaomi 16,” positioning the new lineup to squarely face Apple’s iPhone 17 range when it launches later this month. The move, he said, reflects a generational leap significant enough to warrant a new number and a clearer head-to-head with Apple.
Weibing framed the 17 series as the most important milestone in Xiaomi’s five-year push into the premium tier, noting heavy investments in research and development that are set to double over the next five years. The family will include the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, with the top model described as the most powerful flagship Xiaomi has built.
Xiaomi is also the first Android for Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which will debut in the 17 series. On the hardware side, rumors point to major battery gains across the board: a reported 7,000mAh pack for the standard model and up to 7,500mAh for the 17 Pro Max. The top-end device is also expected to feature a secondary display. Final specifications and availability will be confirmed at launch.
