HERE partnering with Lotus

Google dominates car navigation thanks to its excellent Google Maps and Android Auto service, facilitating easy phone connection with car infotainment. However, as cars grow more complex and drivers lazier, many prefer having preinstalled navigation systems. In that realm, Google is slowly losing its dominance.

HERE, formerly part of Nokia, recently signed a deal with car manufacturer Lotus. The Lotus Emeya, a fully electric model, will feature HERE Navigation integration, along with additional features like the integrated EV Range Assistant and Predictive Routing.

While this may not seem significant for Google, it’s a great deal for HERE. TomTom also secured a deal with Mitsubishi, integrating its HD Maps into Mitsubishi’s High-Definition Locator hardware. Additionally, Apple is working on deeper integration of its services into new-generation vehicles with CarPlay 2.0.

This competition will push Google to improve its services to prevent users from replacing them with in-built car systems.

I recently checked Montenegro and used Here WeGo maps, as roaming is quite expensive there. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at how well Here wEgO Maps performed, much better than Google Maps. It even provided better directions with the phone disconnected from the internet.

By the way, this is Emeya, and I must say, although I’m not a fan of electric cars, I could easily become one with this car. Maybe not in this colour though.
