Googlebook Is Here: Pre-Orders Open for Google’s Android-Based Laptops

Four months after first announcing its intention to build an Android-based laptop platform, Google’s vision is officially a reality. Following a flurry of recent leaks, Google and five major hardware partners—Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo—have opened pre-orders for the first generation of “Googlebooks,” with retail sales scheduled to begin on October 4.

The inaugural lineup offers a diverse range of hardware, with prices spanning from $899 to $1,299. The models cater to various user needs, featuring form factors that range from versatile 2-in-1 convertibles to expansive 15.3-inch workstations.

To sweeten the proposition, Google is bundling a robust digital package with every purchase. Buyers will receive a 12-month Google AI Pro subscription, a massive 5TB of cloud storage, and three-month trials for YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop, and CapCut. In a significant commitment to platform longevity, Google guarantees system updates for up to 10 years.

Googlebook Hardware

• Acer Googlebook 14: Positioned as the sole 2-in-1 convertible in the launch fleet, the Acer model starts at $899. It sports a 14-inch 2.8K OLED touchscreen and is powered by Intel Core Ultra 5 or Ultra 7 processors, offering up to 16 hours of battery life. Acer has notably cautioned that ongoing memory shortages could force a price increase due to rising component costs.

• ASUS Googlebook 14: Priced at $1,299, this model prioritizes ultra-portability. Weighing just 1.0kg, it is the lightest laptop in the lineup while paradoxically offering the most comprehensive port selection.

• Dell XPS Googlebook: Borrowing heavily from the sleek design language of the traditional XPS 13, including its signature glow finish, Dell’s entry is powered by the Snapdragon X Elite processor. Connectivity is minimalist, featuring just two USB-C ports.

• HP Googlebook: Also utilizing the Snapdragon X Elite architecture, HP’s model is geared toward power users. It boasts up to 1TB of internal storage—the largest among the launch devices—and includes both facial recognition and fingerprint biometric unlocking.

• Lenovo Googlebook: Catering to those who need maximum screen real estate, Lenovo offers a 15.3-inch display. It also stands out aesthetically as the only model available in a white finish.

Gemini Integration

The true differentiator for the Googlebook lies in its software. Googlebook OS acts as a hybrid, fusing elements of Android and ChromeOS while deeply embedding Gemini AI into the core user experience.

The standout feature of this new OS is “Magic Pointer.” By hovering the cursor over on-screen elements, Gemini analyzes the context and proactively suggests relevant actions or workflows. Users can accept these suggestions or open a dedicated chat window for more granular assistance.

Google is also prioritizing on-device processing for speed and privacy. The laptops utilize the localized Gemini Nano v3 model for file searches and document summarization, ensuring data does not need to be sent to the cloud. This mirrors the localized AI approach Google has recently implemented on mobile devices like the OnePlus 13.

Seamless ecosystem integration is the platform’s ultimate goal. Googlebook OS allows users to run Android mobile apps natively, transfer files and photos directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, and continue tasks seamlessly across their phone and laptop.

According to Google executive Sameer Samat, the platform is strategically targeted at existing Android users looking for a unified ecosystem, rather than directly attempting to poach MacBook loyalists. While Google plans to introduce iPhone connectivity in the future, a definitive timeline has not yet been established.
