Nothing OS 5.0 Eligibility: Is Your Phone Getting the Android 17 Upgrade?

 Nothing OS 5.0

Nothing is gearing up for the highly anticipated launch of Nothing OS 5.0, the brand’s custom software skin built on the new Android 17 framework. While the beta program is already live for select users and a stable global rollout is expected within weeks, the update brings disappointing news for legacy device owners.

As the London-based tech startup continues to push its software forward, three of its popular smartphones have officially reached the end of their major update lifecycles and will not be eligible for Nothing OS 5.0.

The Devices Left Behind

Device manufacturers are bound by the software update promises made at launch, and Nothing is no exception. Having fulfilled its guaranteed quota of major OS upgrades, the company is cutting off the following smartphones from the Android 17 transition:

  • Nothing Phone 1 (Final OS upgrade: Android 15)

  • Nothing Phone 2 (Final OS upgrade: Android 16)

  • CMF Phone 1 (Final OS upgrade: Android 16)

Security Support and End of Life

While missing out on the latest visual overhauls and software features is frustrating, the primary concern for users is digital security.

Fortunately for owners of the Nothing Phone 2 and the budget-friendly CMF Phone 1, the company will continue to provide critical security patches until mid-2027. This ensures both devices remain safe to use for banking, communication, and general web browsing for another year.

The Nothing Phone 1, however, has officially reached its End of Life (EOL) status. The first-generation device will no longer receive routine security patches, leaving it increasingly vulnerable to emerging malware and cybersecurity threats.

Is It Time to Upgrade?

For those still relying on the Nothing Phone 1 as a daily driver, cybersecurity experts highly recommend upgrading to a newer model. Running an unsupported operating system poses a significant risk to personal data.

Users of the Nothing Phone 2 and CMF Phone 1 have more breathing room, but they should begin considering a hardware upgrade in the near future if they wish to experience the unique aesthetic updates and advanced functionalities that Nothing OS 5.0 will introduce.
