Android may soon offer app-by-app data backup controls

Backup

Google is working on a new Android feature that could significantly improve how users manage data backups. Based on details uncovered in a beta version of Google Play Services, the company appears to be developing a system that would let users enable or disable backups for individual apps separately.

That would mark a meaningful change from the way Android backups currently work. Until now, users have generally had only limited control, usually being able to switch backup on or off as a whole without a clear way to decide which specific apps should be backed up and which should not. This new approach could make the process much more flexible and user-friendly.

According to the early signs found in the beta release, Android may eventually show how much backup space each individual app is using. Alongside that, users could get separate toggles for each app, making it possible to keep backups for important services such as messages, notes, or productivity tools while excluding games or less important apps.

Such a feature would be especially useful for people with limited cloud storage or for anyone who wants more control over privacy and the kind of data being stored remotely. It could also make moving to a new device easier, since backups would become more focused on the apps and information that actually matter to the user.

It is important to note, however, that the feature is not publicly available yet. For now, it appears to be something still in development within a beta version of Google Play Services, which means Google could still change how it works, redesign the interface, or delay its release entirely. Even so, the direction is clear: Google wants Android backups to become more flexible and practical.

If this feature does reach the stable version, Android could finally gain one of those small but genuinely useful upgrades users have wanted for years. It may not be a flashy change, but in everyday use it could make a real difference in how people manage their data and restore their devices.
