Tecno Camon 50 and 50 Pro Launch Early: 3x Periscope Zoom and IP69K Rating Revealed

In a move designed to preempt the crowded news cycle of the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC), Tecno has quietly released its latest photography-focused smartphones in select African markets. The Camon 50 and Camon 50 Pro have officially landed in Kenya, revealing a strategy focused on high-end durability and periscope zoom optics at a mid-range price point.
While a global unveiling was anticipated for Barcelona later this month, this early regional release provides a complete look at the specifications of Tecno’s new challengers.
Shared DNA: The Core Specifications
Under the hood, both the standard and Pro models share a significant amount of DNA. They are powered by MediaTek’s Helio G200 processor, a chipset likely restricted to 4G connectivity, suggesting that 5G variants may still be under wraps for MWC 2026. Both devices are equipped with 8GB of RAM.
Endurance appears to be a major focus for this generation. Tecno has fitted both handsets with a substantial 6,150mAh battery, a capacity that outstrips many flagship competitors. This massive cell is supported by 45W wired fast charging.
On the durability front, Tecno has surprisingly elevated the series to flagship standards. Both phones carry an IP68/69/69K rating, meaning they are not only dust and water-resistant but can also withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets—a rarity in the consumer smartphone segment.
The Differentiators: Display and Optics
The divergence between the two models becomes apparent in design and zoom capabilities.
Both phones feature a 6.78-inch AMOLED panel with a fluid 144Hz refresh rate, Full HD+ resolution, and an integrated fingerprint scanner. However, the standard Camon 50 utilizes a flat display, catering to practical users, while the Camon 50 Pro adopts a curved screen for a more premium aesthetic.
The camera systems—the hallmark of the Camon series—are headlined by the 50-megapixel Sony LYT700C sensor (retained from the previous Camon 40 Pro) and an 8MP ultrawide lens.
The “Pro” moniker earns its keep with the inclusion of a dedicated telephoto lens. The Camon 50 Pro features a 50-megapixel 3x periscope camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). This hardware addition allows for high-quality lossless zoom, a feature entirely absent on the standard model.
Pricing and Availability
The devices run on Tecno’s HiOS 16 and feature modern touches like a dedicated “One-Tap AI Key” and stereo speakers tuned with Dolby Atmos.
Pricing in Kenya has been set aggressively:
-
Tecno Camon 50 (128GB Storage): KES 37,500 (approx. $290)
-
Tecno Camon 50 Pro (256GB Storage): KES 44,000 (approx. $340)
Both devices are currently available for pre-order. While these specific models run on the Helio G200, industry analysts expect Tecno to reveal 5G-enabled variations of the series during the MWC trade show in Barcelona later this month.
