iPhone Air 2 on hold: Apple pivots to iPhone 18 Pro and foldable in 2026

iPhone Air 2

Apple is said to be pulling back on its ultra-thin iPhone strategy. According to The Information, the company no longer plans to launch iPhone Air 2 next fall and has sharply scaled back production of the first-generation model, which debuted in September. The move suggests the iPhone Air hasn’t resonated as strongly with buyers as expected and that Apple is recalibrating its roadmap.

Per the report, the second-generation iPhone Air was targeting:

  • A lighter chassis than the current model

  • More battery capacity

  • A vapor chamber cooling system, mirroring the approach used in this year’s iPhone 17 Pro lineup

Those upgrades now appear to be on hold as Apple rethinks where the Air fits within the broader portfolio.

Without an iPhone Air 2 on the calendar, Apple’s fall 2026 lineup will reportedly consist of:

  • iPhone 18 Pro

  • Apple’s first foldable iPhone

The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18E are said to shift to spring 2027. Even so, one source cited by The Information indicates Apple could still introduce a new iPhone Air as early as spring 2027, leaving the door open for a delayed sequel rather than a complete cancellation.

Scaling back production of the first iPhone Air and pausing a quick successor implies lukewarm demand for the ultra-thin form factor—or at least a need to refine its value proposition. The rumored lineup also underscores Apple’s prioritization of a foldable flagship and the continued staggering of Pro and non-Pro releases to smooth supply, marketing, and feature differentiation.

  • No second-gen iPhone Air in fall 2026; production of the current model is reportedly cut back.

  • Fall 2026: expect iPhone 18 Pro and a foldable iPhone.

  • Spring 2027: iPhone 18 and iPhone 18E—and possibly a revived iPhone Air sequel, timing permitting.
