WhatsApp Threads: The New Feature Organizes Replies and Simplifies Conversations
|WhatsApp has begun rolling out one of its most anticipated features to date—organizing message replies into structured threads. The WhatsApp threads functionality, first spotted in development in beta version 2.25.7.7, is now becoming available to select beta testers on Android with the latest 2.25.25.8 update, reports WABetaInfo. The goal is to bring order to group chats and make it easier to follow conversations that often become intertwined.
The new system completely changes how we reply to messages. Every time a user replies to a specific message, a thread is automatically created beneath it. Instead of replies appearing disconnected in the main chat, they will now be neatly grouped together.
A new indicator will appear on the original message, showing the number of replies within the thread. Tapping this indicator opens a dedicated view where all related messages are arranged chronologically. Within this view, users can continue the conversation by adding new replies that are automatically linked to the thread.
It is also possible to reply to a specific response within the thread itself, which the system may label as a “Follow-up reply.” This preserves context even in the most complex discussions, allowing users to know exactly which message is being responded to.
The main advantage of this approach is clarity, especially in active group chats where multiple participants are discussing different topics simultaneously. By visually separating conversations, users can easily follow the flow of a discussion without losing context or missing important messages.
WhatsApp threads feature allows for focusing on relevant topics without being distracted by other messages in the main chat. If you join a conversation late, you no longer have to scroll through the entire history to piece together who replied to what. Simply open the thread, and the entire discussion related to that message will be in one place.
It is important to note that threads are only created for messages sent after the feature is enabled; older replies will not be retroactively grouped. The system also works even if the message recipients do not yet have the feature activated—the sender will still see their conversations organized into threads.
The feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers who install the latest version of the app from the Google Play Store, with a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks.
