Google makes sideloading easier
|Google Play Store has started rolling out a new “Pause” Play Protect feature, allowing users to temporarily disable app security scans.
Unlike the previous “Turn off” option, the new feature automatically reactivates Play Protect the next day, reducing the risk of forgetting to turn it back on.
This update should help protect users from malware and scams.
Android users who often install applications outside the Play Store, i.e. “manually”, are often exposed to security risks. This feature scans APK files for malware, as well as after installation.
However, even though it is crucial to protect the device, Play Protect can sometimes interfere with the installation and slow it down. By introducing a feature that allows users to temporarily pause Play Protect, Google is making sideloading easier with minimal risk.
The usually problem occurs when users sideload applications, i.e. install them from sources other than the Google Play Store, they must disable Play Protect to bypass its restrictions. Many forget to turn it back on later, leaving their devices open to malware.
