Nokia posted their Q4 2023 results

Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia released their financial results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2023. The company posted a decline in net sales both in Q4 2023 and for the full year 2023, as high interest rates put pressure on operators to cut back investments.

In Q4 2023, Nokia reported revenue of 5.7 billion euro, which is year-over-year decrease of 23% compared to the same quarter last year. The quarter ended with a reported net loss of 33 million euro, but in comparable results that is 568 million euro in profit, still a decline of 39% compared to the same quarter in 2022. For full year, the company reported 22.2 billion euro in revenue (11% YoY decline).

Nokia also announced a 600 million euro share buyback program. Even though the results showed a decline, the stock market reacted positively to report (and the buyback program) leading Nokia’s stock to increase 11% yesterday.

Similar to its primary competitor Ericsson, Nokia faced significant challenges in 2023. Full-year revenues declined by 8% when comparing like-for-like. The company anticipates another decrease in sales in 2024, primarily due to the severe struggles in its mobile networks unit. Despite the loss of the AT&T mobile contract, the company does not foresee a ripple effect in other areas. The CEO is optimistic about “green shoots” emerging in the second half of 2024, but these positive developments will stem from its non-mobile networks units.
