A fresh leak has added new specifics to the expected camera configuration of the Honor Magic 9 Pro, covering both the front-facing and rear imaging systems. The report suggests that Honor is preparing one of the most ambitious camera setups seen in an Android flagship, headlined by a unique square-format selfie sensor.

According to the leak, the Honor Magic 9 Pro will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 (SM8975) chipset. More unusually, the phone is said to use a 1:1 square front camera sensor, which would make it the first Android smartphone to adopt this format.

A square sensor offers a wider effective field of view for selfies and vlogging because it captures a more balanced area in both portrait and landscape orientations. Users would not need to rotate the phone to switch between vertical and horizontal framing; instead, the device could crop or reframe the square capture as needed.

The leak also claims that Honor’s square selfie camera borrows technology developed for its previously rumored “Robot Phone” project, indicating that the company has been refining this sensor design for some time.

While the square front camera is not entirely new information — reports in May already suggested Honor was testing a similar sensor for the standard Magic 9 — this latest leak strengthens the case that the Magic 9 Pro could be the first to ship with it. Oppo has also been tipped to be working on a square front camera for its Find X10 series, and a tipster behind the current leak noted in comments that Vivo is preparing its own version for next year. That points to the possibility of the square sensor becoming a broader trend among Chinese smartphone manufacturers rather than a one-off experiment.

Rear camera system: two 200MP sensors and ARRI collaboration

On the rear, the reported specifications align with earlier rumors. The Honor Magic 9 Pro is expected to feature:

    • 3-degree optical image stabilization (OIS)

  • 50MP ultrawide camera

  • 200MP periscope telephoto camera

This dual-200MP rear configuration — combining a high-resolution main sensor with an equally detailed periscope telephoto — was first highlighted by tipster Digital Chat Station in March. The large sensors and bright apertures suggest a strong emphasis on low-light performance, dynamic range and high-detail zoom photography.

Honor’s existing partnership with ARRI is also expected to extend to the Magic 9 Pro. That collaboration should bring refinements to color science, tone mapping and video processing, potentially positioning the phone as a serious tool for mobile filmmakers as well as still photographers.

Launch timing and broader implications

The Honor Magic 9 series is expected to launch in China around October. As the release date approaches, additional details about the camera tuning, video capabilities and software features are likely to emerge.

If Honor does ship the Magic 9 Pro with a square selfie sensor and a dual-200MP rear system, it would mark a notable step forward in smartphone camera design. The square front camera could influence how users frame selfies and vlogs, while the rear setup reinforces the industry’s push toward extremely high-resolution main and telephoto sensors.

With Oppo and Vivo also reportedly exploring similar front-camera formats, the Honor Magic 9 Pro may be the first of several flagships to adopt this new approach to smartphone selfie imaging.
