For over half a decade, Samsung has watched from the sidelines as its rivals turned battery capacity into a mobile arms race. While Chinese competitors regularly push past the 6,000mAh and 7,000mAh thresholds, Samsung’s premier Galaxy S Ultra line has remained stubbornly anchored to a 5,000mAh cell since 2020. However, a new leak suggests the tech giant recently toyed with a massive 7,000mAh battery for the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra—before ultimately changing course.

The 7,000mAh Prototype and the S Pen Dilemma

According to the South Korean tech tipster known as “kro” on X, Samsung developed and tested up to five different prototypes for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Among them was a radical configuration that managed to house a staggering 7,000mAh battery.

The catch? Achieving this capacity reportedly required removing the device’s built-in S Pen.

While there is no official confirmation that Samsung built this specific prototype, ditching the stylus would represent a monumental shift in the company’s hardware philosophy. The S Pen has been the defining feature of the Ultra series since it absorbed the Galaxy Note lineage. Ultimately, it appears Samsung was unwilling to sacrifice its signature stylus for sheer battery volume.

Galaxy S27 Ultra Compromise: A Silicon-Carbon Leap

Instead of the 7,000mAh behemoth, insiders now point to Samsung settling on a capacity between 5,700mAh and 6,000mAh for the final production model. While it falls short of the highest-capacity prototype, this still represents the most significant battery upgrade the Ultra line has seen in years.

To achieve this boost without drastically increasing the phone’s footprint, Samsung is rumored to be adopting silicon-carbon battery technology. Unlike traditional lithium-ion cells, silicon-carbon allows for far greater energy density, packing more power into the same physical space. However, this technology comes with its own set of engineering challenges, primarily regarding long-term degradation. According to the leak, Samsung’s engineering teams are currently weighing this immediate capacity gain against the battery’s overall lifespan and durability—a balancing act that may have also contributed to the demise of the 7,000mAh prototype.

Rounded Edges and Premium Audio

Beyond battery specs, the leak corroborates recent rumors regarding the Galaxy S27 Ultra’s aesthetic evolution. Newly surfaced renders suggest the device is adopting a softer, more rounded design language, drawing visible inspiration from recent iPhone and Google Pixel models.

The tipster also briefly teased the development of a new high-end Samsung audio product. Variously referred to as the “Galaxy Buds Ultra” or “Galaxy Buds Max,” the device aligns with earlier industry whispers that Samsung is developing a pair of premium over-ear headphones to compete with the likes of Apple’s AirPods Max.

While a 7,000mAh Galaxy S27 Ultra remains an intriguing “what-if,” a jump to the 6,000mAh territory would finally close the endurance gap between Samsung and its fiercest Android rivals, including Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo.
