Rural or larger facilities, on the other hand, may take advantage of gravity tanks or flotation units that offer lower operating costs even if they require more space.

Operators also consider the characteristics of the sludge itself. Waste activated sludge, for example, can be more difficult to settle and may perform better in flotation systems. Primary sludge, which settles easily, is well-matched to gravity thickeners. Budget, maintenance capabilities, and long-term sustainability goals also influence decisions here.
