OpenAI is significantly bolstering its presence in India, announcing a developer conference scheduled for November 4, 2025, in Bengaluru. Underscoring the market’s strategic importance, the company will also offer a complimentary one-year subscription to its affordable ChatGPT Go plan for all users in India, starting the same day.

The event aims to foster connections with India’s vibrant developer, educator, and enterprise communities, while also serving as a platform to introduce new initiatives specifically designed for the local market. This marks a clear recognition of India’s status as a critical hub in OpenAI’s global strategy and its rapidly evolving AI landscape.

In a major promotional move coinciding with the conference, the free one-year ChatGPT Go subscription will be available to both new sign-ups and existing subscribers in India beginning November 4. Current paying users will automatically have an additional 12 months of free access appended to their existing subscription. OpenAI has not yet specified the end date for this limited-time offer.

Launched in India in August 2025 at ₹399 per month, ChatGPT Go represents OpenAI’s most accessible paid tier. It offers substantially increased usage limits compared to the free version and includes access to advanced capabilities such as image generation, file uploads, and enhanced memory for more personalized interactions, all powered by the latest GPT-5 model.

India has quickly ascended to become OpenAI’s second-largest market globally, behind only the United States, with millions utilizing ChatGPT daily across various sectors. The introduction of ChatGPT Go notably spurred growth, reportedly doubling the number of paid subscribers within the first month alone, highlighting the strong local demand for affordable AI tools.

OpenAI’s expansion efforts align with the Indian government’s “IndiaAI Mission,” focused on strengthening the nation’s AI ecosystem. The company recently opened its first office in New Delhi and is actively building local teams dedicated to education, enterprise solutions, and community engagement, alongside collaborations with governmental programs and academic institutions.

This increased focus comes amid intensifying competition within India’s large and tech-savvy market. Rivals like Perplexity (partnering with Airtel) and Google are also making significant plays, offering free access to their premium AI services to capture user adoption.

By hosting its first DevDay Exchange in India and coupling it with a generous free subscription offer, OpenAI is signalling a strong, long-term commitment to participating in and contributing to the country’s accelerating AI development.
