HMD Fusion 2 Leaks Reveal Upgraded Display, Chip, and New Modular Outfits

HMD Global appears readying the successor to its unique modular smartphone, the HMD Fusion. According to information shared by the leaker “HMD Meme” on X (formerly Twitter), the upcoming HMD Fusion 2 is set to feature notable upgrades to its display and processor while retaining the core “Smart Outfits” concept that defined the original.

The new model reportedly moves to a 6.58-inch Full HD+ display boasting a smoother 120Hz refresh rate. This marks a significant improvement over the original Fusion’s 6.56-inch HD+ 90Hz panel. Internally, the leak suggests a processor upgrade, swapping the entry-level Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 for the more capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 4.

On the camera front, HMD seems to be taking a practical approach. While the high-resolution 108MP main sensor is expected to remain, the secondary 2MP lens is reportedly being replaced by a significantly more versatile 8MP ultra-wide camera.

Other anticipated specifications mentioned in the leak include IP65 water and dust resistance, NFC capabilities, Bluetooth 5.3, and the welcome inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack.

However, the defining characteristic of the Fusion line remains its modularity via “Smart Outfits.” The Fusion 2 is expected to retain the magnetic pin system on its back, allowing users to attach various functional cases tailored to different use cases.

Furthermore, the leak suggests HMD is expanding this ecosystem with “Smart Outfits Gen 2.” This new lineup reportedly includes options like a Wireless Charge Outfit, Gaming Outfit, Camera Grip Outfit, Speaker Outfit, and even an intriguing Smart Projector Outfit. More basic options like a Casual Outfit with a Kickstand, a Rugged Outfit, and a stylistic “Flashy” Outfit are also mentioned.

Support for user-created, 3D-printed custom designs using the open-source Fusion Development Toolkit, introduced with the first generation, is also likely to continue with the Fusion 2.

While no official launch date has been announced, the appearance of these detailed leaks suggests that development of the HMD Fusion 2 is well underway. The company appears committed to exploring the modular smartphone concept further.
