WhatsApp Launches In-App Translation With Hindi Support for Android

WhatsApp Hindi translation

WhatsApp today began the global rollout of its highly anticipated in-app message translation feature for both Android and iPhone. Crucially for users in India, the initial release for Android includes support for Hindi, aiming to break down language barriers for millions. The feature is being rolled out gradually starting today and will be available in one-on-one chats, groups, and Channel messages.

How to Use the WhatsApp Hindi translation

Activating the new tool is straightforward. Users can simply long-press any message they wish to translate, and a “Translate” option will appear in the context menu. Tapping it will allow them to choose their desired language, making cross-language conversations seamless.

Platform Differences and Hindi Support

At launch, there is a notable difference in language availability between the two major platforms. While iPhone users will receive support for over 19 languages, the initial Android version focuses on six major global languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, and importantly, Hindi. This inclusion makes the feature immediately useful for a vast user base in India.

Android users will also get an exclusive feature at launch: the ability to enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread. When activated, all incoming messages in that conversation will be translated automatically.

A Major Step for Communication

While in-app translation is not a new concept in the tech world, its integration into a platform with billions of users like WhatsApp marks a significant step in making global communication more accessible. WhatsApp has confirmed that it plans to expand language support for all users in future updates. As the feature is rolling out gradually, it may take a few days to appear for everyone.
