WhatsApp Adds Voicemail-Like Option for Missed Calls

WhatsApp Voicemail

WhatsApp is quietly transforming the way users handle unanswered calls. According to information spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.23.21, the platform is rolling out a new feature that allows callers to record a voice message when the recipient doesn’t pick up.

The feature builds on previous updates that introduced notification reminders for missed calls. Those reminders made it easier for users to schedule follow-ups at preset intervals, ensuring they never forgot to return important calls. Now, WhatsApp is going a step further by effectively offering a built-in voicemail alternative.

How the new feature works

When a call goes unanswered, beta testers now see a dedicated option at the bottom of the call screen to quickly record and send a voice note. The same option also appears directly in the chat thread associated with the missed call, making it a context-aware shortcut. Unlike traditional voice notes, which require users to manually switch back into the chat, this feature is designed for immediacy and convenience.

Once sent, the voice message appears in the conversation like any other audio clip, ensuring the recipient can listen at their convenience. Importantly, the missed call notification remains active, so users are aware of both the missed call and the accompanying voice note.

For example, if you’re calling a colleague during work hours and they’re tied up in a meeting, you can instantly leave a short voice message explaining the situation. This eliminates the need to schedule another call or type out a long text, while ensuring the recipient still gets the message as soon as they’re free.

Gradual rollout to testers

The feature is currently available to some beta testers who download the latest WhatsApp beta for Android via the Google Play Store, with a broader rollout expected in the coming weeks.

As with many WhatsApp features, gradual testing is part of the process before wider availability across Android, iOS, Web/Desktop, and Windows. For now, users interested in early access can keep track of updates through WABetaInfo, which regularly reports on new additions to the platform.

This update highlights WhatsApp’s continued effort to bridge the gap between real-time calls and asynchronous messaging, ensuring that even when someone misses a call, important information can still be delivered instantly.
